Understanding Timestamp Formats
A timestamp (also known as Unix time, POSIX time or epoch time) represents a specific point in time as the number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970, at 00:00:00 UTC. This universal time reference point—often called "the epoch"—was established as computing standard that provides a consistent way to track and measure time across different systems and time zones. Modern applications commonly use millisecond precision (13 digits) or even microsecond precision (16 digits) for more accurate timing. Note that systems using 32-bit signed integers to store timestamps will encounter the Year 2038 problem, as they cannot represent times after January 19, 2038.
Time Interval | Equivalent in Seconds |
---|---|
1 hour | 3,600 seconds |
1 day | 86,400 seconds |
1 week | 604,800 seconds |
1 month (average: 30.44 days) | 2,629,743 seconds |
1 year (average: 365.24 days) | 31,556,926 seconds |
unixtimestamp-converter provides tools to easily convert between human-readable dates and timestamp formats, making it simple to work with different time representations across various programming languages and systems.
